Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni Valley Constituency, Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, has emphasized the need for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to distribute disability funds without politicization or discrimination.

During the disbursement of initial items to persons with disabilities by the Prestea Huni Valley municipality, he stressed that issues affecting them should not be politicized, as they have unique talents that can be nurtured with the right opportunities.

He urged MMDAs to implement projects that can generate funds to complement government support.

At a brief ceremony handing over deep freezers, industrial machines, wheelchairs, fufu pounding machines, and cocoa spraying machines to persons with disabilities, the MP emphasized the importance of inclusivity.

He urged MMDCEs to ensure all communities access support for persons with disabilities, highlighting the government’s agenda to reach every citizen.

Additionally, he encouraged persons with disabilities to recognize their worth, work diligently, and believe in their potential for success.

“I’m advising fellow MMDCEs to ensure inclusivity by bringing all individuals with disabilities under the district association umbrella, free from discrimination. There have been complaints about selectivity when disbursing items.

To address this, I suggest dividing beneficiaries into groups if numbers are high, ensuring everyone benefits, and rotating groups to avoid favoritism. Additionally, I recommend assemblies implement projects in their names to generate revenue locally, reducing dependence on central government support,” he said.

Municipal Chief Executive for Prestea Huni Valley, Matthew Kofi Ayeh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities as part of its agenda.

He urged beneficiaries to utilize the provided items productively and avoid street begging, emphasizing that it’s not only dangerous but also discouraged by the assembly.

“Under President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda, persons with disabilities are a priority. He has instructed MMDCEs and Assemblies to ensure each individual receives their quota.

Today, we’re here to support you. My advice is to utilize the funds for self-development and business growth, not household expenses. Let’s use this opportunity to uplift ourselves and set a positive example for others. To those who may have resorted to begging, I urge you to make the most of this support and strive for a better future.” He advised.

Chairman of the Federation for Persons with Disability in the Prestea Huni Valley municipality, Patrick Obeng, expressed gratitude to the government after receiving the items.

He urged the government to continue its support and encouraged persons with disabilities to prioritize their safety by avoiding risky activities.

“I’m deeply saddened by the sight of our people begging on the streets. I’m urging the assembly to work towards removing individuals in vulnerable situations from our streets.

Recently, I’ve taken action against some deaf individuals soliciting help with printed envelopes, and they’ve ceased the practice. With the assembly’s support, I believe we can continue to address this issue. I’m grateful for the support we’ve received and encourage my members to utilize it effectively,” he stated.
