Former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has alleged that she was physically assaulted by individuals believed to be affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the just-ended rerun of parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North constituency.

In a social media post shortly after the incident, Madam Koomson described the assailants as “NDC machomen” who attacked her while she was peacefully observing proceedings at one of the polling centres.

“I was assaulted by NDC machomen while peacefully observing the Ablekuma North Rerun”. She recounted.

This she says has led to the loss of her valuable items.

“During this unfortunate incident, my personal mobile phone was forcibly taken.” Madam Koomson alleged.

The former Awutu Senya East legislator urged the general public to disregard any form of communication received from the missing phone.

“Any calls, messages, social media posts, or broadcasts originating from my number from the time of incidence onwards should be treated as unauthorised and not from me,” she cautioned.

The former lawmaker for Awutu Senya East was seen in a video footage being pushed to the ground and reportedly stomped in the chest and groin area by unidentified men before police officers intervened.

Eye‐witnesses report that the assailants overpowered the security detail at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station and launched an assault on several political figures, including the former MP.

The assault has raised several debates over the effectiveness of security personnel deployed during elections.
