Member of Parliament elect for Ablekuma North constituency, Ewurabena Aubynn has said she was expectant of a win ahead of the rerun of elections in 19 polling stations.

Speaking to the media after being declared winner of the elections, she said “A win was expected because we fought so hard.”

When asked about the pockets of violence activities recorded during the polls and assault against Hawa Koomson, the MP-elect noted that she is not aware of such incidents as she’s been busy moving around polling stations.

However, she urged the police to look into the chaos and take action against perpetrators.

“I’ve been busy going around the polling station and have not been on social media or watch television.

“These are security issues and can be looked into and if there are people involved the police will take action,” the MP stated.

She continued: “The whole compliment is to each other and hand in hand…I’m sure we will work at it and see how best we can improve the constituency.”

She was declared winner by officials of the Electoral Commission at the Greater Accra Regional office on July 11 after she secured a total of 34, 090 votes compared with that of her closest contender, Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The declaration was made after a rerun of the election in 19 polling stations where over 6,000 eligible voters were expected to cast their votes.

Turnout was however low.

The rerun became necessary following disagreement between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over discrepancies in results from some 37 polling stations.

After prolonged discussions, the Electoral Commission to rerun the election at 19 out of the 37 polling stations. The NPP protested the decision and proceeded to apply to the High Court for Injunction.

The injunction was dismissed, paving way for the conduct of the election. Despite sporadic incidents of violence, the election was largely peaceful.

Chaotic scenes

Earlier in the day, former MP for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson was beaten up by some unknown thugs who forcefully invaded the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station during voting at the Ablekuma North constituency.

Some unknown thugs pulled up in a pick-up vehicle at the polling station and forcefully entered the premises of the polling station which was then being protected by police officers.

TV3’s Stanley Nii Blewu who was present at the scene reported that the former lawmaker was kicked in the groin and fell to the ground. After which, the thugs continued to kick her on the ground until the police officers quickly intervened and whisked her away.

Also, the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah was beaten by a group of unidentified thugs at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station during the ongoing parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

Stronghold of NPP

Ablekuma North has traditionally been seen as a safe seat for the party. The NPP has won the seat in every election.

The results of Friday’s election mark a dramatic change in the Greater Accra Region’s political climate, as a number of formerly secure seats are now up for grabs.

According to political analysts, the NPP may have lost important support as a result of internal strife, contradictory messages regarding rerun participation, and the violent events on election day.

Ewurabena Aubynn’s victory changes the political landscape of the constituency ahead of the general election in 2028.

Her electoral success supports the developing narrative that the NDC is making up ground in the Greater Accra Region’s urban and peri-urban seats.
