A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has criticised the government for what he describes as a “misplaced priority” in its launch of a Performance Tracker.

The Tracker, launched Wednesday, April 10, 2024, according to the government, is to provide accountability for the administration’s provision of infrastructure across the country.

But according to the NDC, the time and resources wasted on the formulation and launching of the Tracker could have been invested in bettering the lives of the citizenry.

Mr. Gbande has questioned how the Tracker can contribute to improving the lives of Ghanaians, criticising the government for implementing a policy that does not align with the genuine welfare and concerns of Ghanaians.

“How will the performance [tracker] impact the ordinary Ghanaian who has not eaten in the last 24 hours? How would that impact the life of an old lady who is helpless but cannot get health care and government intervention?” he quizzed whilst speaking on Accra-based Citi News.

He explained further that a competent government does not need to trumpet its achievements to the citizens as their good deeds would be known by the people.

“Today we are back to cash and carry in terms of infrastructure. They want to present what they have captured on a performance tracker that does not reflect what is on the ground.

“So clearly, these are people who continue to lie. They continue to demonstrate that they don’t care about the ordinary Ghanaian. Because if the government performs well, you don’t need a tracker to showcase your performance, the people of Ghana will know,” he lamented.
