The number of cases pending before the Supreme Court against the Attorney-General over Presidential term limit has increased to five.
The latest suit was filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on July 30, 2026. This was disclosed by the Deputy-Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai in a Facebook post on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The cases currently before the apex court are:
- Azubila E. Salam v. The Attorney-General — J1/4/2026, filed December 23, 2025.
- Kenneth K.A. Kuranchie v. The Attorney-General — J1/20/2026, filed June 30, 2026.
- Ganiwu Alhassan v. The Attorney-General — J1/21/2026, filed July 9, 2026.
- Eric Appiah v. The Attorney-General — J1/26/2026, filed July 20, 2026.
- New Patriotic Party v. The Attorney-General — J1/27/2026, filed July 30, 2026.
The latest case, filed by the NPP, brings to five the number of pending suits before the Supreme Court relating to the constitutional provisions on presidential term limits.
The development comes amid growing political and popular interest in the constitutional restrictions on presidential office and the conditions under which a candidate may run for office.
The Supreme Court will decide on the substantive arguments of the cases and the particular remedies the plaintiffs are requesting.
The Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine who is the defendant in each of the five instances, is expected to respond to the suits.
Dr. Ayine has announced that the government has accepted the recommendation of the Constitutional Review Committee to extend the presidential term from 4 to 5 years.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, July 30, he said that the minimum eligible age to contest for president was reduced to 35 from 40.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this proposed amendment does not apply to the incumbent President,” he said.
The Constitutional Review Committee had proposed a five-year presidential term in Ghana. The committee noted that the current four-year term was too short.
It also said it did not find a place for a third term for a sitting president during its work.
