The founder and leader of the Movement for Change (M4C), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has said the government’s reliance on the port for most of its taxes is a lazy man’s approach of raising revenue.

According to Mr. Kyerematen, Ghana’s tax structure needs to be changed in order to raise revenue through direct taxes than indirect taxes.

He explains the reliance on indirect taxes makes living conditions unbearable for citizens since it generally shoots prices of commodities up.

Speaking on Onua FM’s Pae Mu Ka Thursday, April 19, 2024, the former Trade and Industry Minister indicated that he was going to abolish most of the taxes at the port such as the Special import levy, GHS disinfection fee, Covid levy, EPA levy amongst others that have become a nuisance to traders.

“If we want to increase revenue”, Alan Kyerematen says “we need to change our tax structure.”

“Raising revenue at the port is a lazy way of raising revenue. So we’ll abolish a lot of the levies,” he assured.

“We are rather concentrating on the indirect taxes instead of the direct taxes. We’ve turned it upside down. If we reduce the import duties, businesses would be able to produce more. But we’ve turned it upside down and killing businesses,” the presumptive flag bearer of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC) stated.

Mr Kyerematen resigned from the NPP last year to form M4C, seeking to contest the December 7 elections as an independent presidential candidate.

He has since formed an alliance with other political groupings. The Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC) aims at winning the upcoming presidential polls.

The founding member of the NPP said he was pushed out of the ruling party because the new kids were talking recklessly.

He later outlined his track record before leaving the party, stressing that it even outweighs many of the loudmouths in the party.
