The intention by the Electoral Commission (EC) to use the Ghana Card as the sole identification for registering prospective voters for the 2024 elections has been lauded by founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP).
Akwasi Addai Odike is of the view that, the move will resolve the issue of who is a Ghanaian and a foreigner during the registration.
“I agree with the Electoral Commission to use the Ghana Card as the sole identification of every citizen of this country who is eligible to vote and be voted for. It is better every citizen has an identity. Passport is only a travelling document and cannot be used as proof of identity. The use of guarantor is also archaic. So Ghana Card is the ideal proof of identity,” Odike told Onuaonline.
The politician cum businessman however wants all political parties to rather mount pressure on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to issue the card to all Ghanaians without any delay.
“What we need to do is to ensure the NIA issue Ghana card to every Ghanaian. All the political parties should come together and enforce the issuance of the card for every Ghanaian,” he called.
