A 28-year-old man is battling for his life at Kenyase Number 2  Hospital after youth in the community clashed with the Police in the area.

Yaw Asamoah, a native of Kenyase Number 2 was sent to the hospital after he was hit by a bullet, with three among four others who were in critical condition discharged.

Background

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, a mob of youth from two Kenyase towns allegedly invaded the Mensah Kumda Village (MKV), the Senior Management Staff residential estate of Newmont Ahafo Mines near Kenyase Number 2 and caused extensive destruction to property belonging to the mine and some private individuals.

Information gathered by our news team indicates the personnel from the Formed Police Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit stationed with the Newmont Company had an altercation with the youth in the area leading to the death of one person.

That infuriated the youth to storm the residency of the mine workers to cause mayhem, leading to the injury of five persons including Yaw Asamoah.

His death sparked a revolt by the youth leading to four more people being shot. The youth after the incident stormed the mining site and destroyed many things.

The youth action affected 80 families , 85 school children , 17 teachers and other workers traumatized.

22 houses in the mining site vandalized and families displaced.

Seven vehicles belonging to the mining company and the contractors were also vandalised among other things.

Yaw Asamoah who was receiving treatment at the time of the News team visit narrated that:

“I followed a crowd to where someone had been reportedly shot by the police. While standing at cooperative watching things untold, I saw the police fire warning shots into the sky. But , suddenly all I could see was a policeman fire his gun into the ground where I was and the bullets strayed into my arms badly injuring me in the chest arm.”

The Medical Superintendent of the Kenyase Number 2 Hospital, Dr Philemon Mbilla said he is currently responding to treatment. He said the condition of the only injured on admission has now been stabilized.

“He came in a very bad state but the other three, admitted , treated and discharged,” he confirmed.

Whilst the deputy minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, want the community to forget about what has happened for peace to prevail, General Manager of the Newmont Ahafo Mine, Alex Annin says he wants the truth to prevail pending police investigations.

He expressed the company’s sympathies with the bereaved family and the injured.

“We sympathize with the family who have lost a dear one as a mine, we condemn the shooting incident. We expect the police who are a key stakeholders to dig into the matter and bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.
