Former Youth and Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has lashed out at the appointment of Otto Addo, insisting he should have been sacked a long time ago.

Mr Nii Lante Vanderpuye said the now sacked Black Stars coach should not have been entrusted with the senior national men’s soccer team given his background and experience.

Speaking on Citi Sports’ Sports Panorama last week, the former Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo Constituency said Ghana should have gone into a team rebuilding programme after the abysmal 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign.

“What we needed to do was to have that tenacity and patience and say we are building a new team for the next 10 or 20 years,” he said.

“If that is what we decided to do, then you need Otto Addo because he is development coach, so you take him to U-12, U-14 or U-17 to start developing those talents there.

“You don’t entrust him with the senior national team, he himself how many times did he play in the senior national team?”

Otto Addo was sacked following Ghana’s 1-2 loss against Germany. That came on the back of a 5-1 loss to Austria.

For the former Sports Minister, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) would have avoided paying huge compensation package go Otto Addo if he had been sacked long before the recent decision.
