Although the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has said he doesn’t know Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Nana Poku (NAPO) to be arrogant, he has asked the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, not to affirm that notion about him.
According to the Asantehene, comments he has heard from the public indicate that NAPO is an arrogant man akin to what he knows him of.
The Asantehene made his comments during the official introduction of the New Patriotic Party’s ticket to him at the Manhyia Palace Tuesday, July 09, 2024.
In his words, he cautioned NAPO not to let Dr. Bawumia regret choosing him as his running mate. He counseled him to be humble and adhere to whatever his boss will tell him.
“I have advised him indoors but I will say it here too. Don’t let Dr Bawumia regret ever choosing you. Serve him and follow his instructions. Follow him with humility. Be obedient and do as he says,” Otumfuo had said.
He added that “some people are saying you are arrogant and I was wondering why they were saying that because you were bred well with home-knowledge. Prove them wrong.”
He told Dr. Bawumia to report to him when he goes wrong, so that he reprimands him himself. “Dr Bawumia I leave my grandson in your care. In case he errs, keep me informed and I will deal with him.”
But according to the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, due to NAPO’s character, the Asantehene’s advice were full of red flags.
Speaking with Captain Smart on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Mr. Adongo questioned the NPP if he is the only choice they could offer Ghanaians after John Kufuor.
“Otumfuo couldn’t wholeheartedly support NAPO and all his comments were red flags. In less than 2 hours after the advise at Manhyia, he went overboard [at the Jubilee Park]. Is this all the Ashanti Region could offer Ghana after giving us Kufuor? You should have rather apologised to the butterfly to come home,” he quizzed.
His comments follow a statement made by Dr. Opoku Prempeh at the Kumasi Jubilee Park, where he was being unveiled to the public after the introduction of the ticket to the Asantehene.
“I can boldly say that if the history of Ghana is told from 1957, we have never had a president that has helped Ghana more than Nana Akufo-Addo. I mean from 1957, even including your Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected Ghana and developed the country more than Nana Akufo-Addo,” NAPO had said in Twi.
