Ghana’s Parliament after some weeks on recession will reconvene today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

This will be the House’s first sitting after the December 07, 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections which determined the fate of many of the lawmakers.

The session comes after the Speaker’s Office issued an official circular on Wednesday, December 11, confirming the location for the sitting which had earlier been announced.

Prior to the election on Saturday, December 07, Parliament was characterised with so much confusion over which caucus was majority and minority following a ruling by the Speaker of Parliament which was overturned by the Supreme Court.

With the government seeking to complete some businesses before the end of the 8th Parliament, the Majority caucus invoked the Standing Orders of the House for members to be recalled to address what it described as government’s urgent business.

However, the Speaker indicated that legislators were busily embarking on their campaign and would reconvene the House only after the elections.

Meanwhile, some high-profile Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah-Kubi, have lost their seats, altering the balance of power in the legislature.

The NDC’s electoral victory extended to the presidential race, where John Dramani Mahama triumphed the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with over 1.6 million votes.
