President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a message of support to the Black Stars ahead of their opening match against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, assuring the team of the full backing of the government and people of Ghana.
In a statement issued on behalf of the government and over 30 million Ghanaians, President Mahama described Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup as a testament to the resilient spirit of the nation.
Addressing the players, he reminded them that they carry more than just footballing ambitions onto the pitch.
“You carry more than a ball. You are carrying the hopes, dreams and heritage of a people. From the streets of Chorkor to the plains of Bole, every Ghanaian heart beats in sync with yours,” he said.
The President also called on Ghanaians living in Canada and across North America to rally behind the national team and serve as the “12th Man” during the tournament.
He urged members of the Ghanaian diaspora to fill the stands with the national colours and create an atmosphere that would inspire the players throughout the competition.
President Mahama further noted that the government had taken steps to ensure all Ghanaians can follow the tournament by securing official television broadcast rights, allowing matches to be shown across the country.
According to him, the arrangement will enable football fans from every part of Ghana to watch the Black Stars’ campaign and share in the excitement of the tournament.
The President encouraged the players to compete with pride and determination, urging them to play for the national flag and for the many young Ghanaians who dream of following in their footsteps.
“The world is watching, and we are confident that the Black Star will shine brighter than ever before on this global stage,” he stated.
The Black Stars begin their Group L campaign against Panama in Toronto, hoping to make a strong start as they pursue a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
