The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of the gang leader as well as one other suspect in connection with the deadly robbery attack on Berekum Chelsea last Sunday.

The attack after a Ghana Premier League game with FC Samartex in Samreboi led to the death of striker Dominic Frimpong. He had sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital.

Shortly after the incident, police launched a manhunt for the robbers, six in all.

The attackers were said to have opened fire on the team bus at Ahyiresu on the Bibiani-Goaso highway and made away with items including a cash of GH¢4,500 belonging to one George Owusu Afriyie, who was also on-board the VIP bus carrying the team.

“One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention,” the police said in a statement on Wednesday, April 15.

They promised that further details will be communicated.

Meanwhile, club officials have revealed a new arrangement to have two police escorts when travelling for a game.

This is part of measures to ensure their safety and security.
