The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale manhunt for a group of armed robbers responsible for a deadly attack along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin district of the Ashanti region.

According to an official press release issued on Monday, April 13, 2026, the incident occurred on Sunday night at about 10:30 pm, when passengers traveling on the stretch were ambushed by six heavily armed men, three of whom were carrying pump-action guns.

Police say a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, transporting about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum, came under attack during the robbery. In an attempt to escape, the driver veered off the road, causing the bus to skid into nearby bushes.

During the chaos, one of the passengers, footballer Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but sadly died while receiving treatment.

Another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of an amount of GHS 4,500.00 during the attack.

Police patrol teams who responded to distress calls retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are expected to aid ongoing investigations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel and Crime Scene experts to intensify efforts to track down the suspects.

In the statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, the Police assured the public of their commitment to swiftly apprehending the perpetrators.

“The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement emphasized.

Authorities are also urging the public to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police as investigations proceed into the tragic incident.
