The Western Central Regional Police Command has restored calm at Benso near Tarkwa following a violent disturbance on Sunday, June 7, 2026, which left two people injured, including one with gunshot wounds.
The incident, which initially stemmed from a dispute over a parked motorcycle, escalated into a full-blown confrontation involving forestry officials and a group of the youth in the community.
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, June 9, the Police at Benso received a report at about 8:20 pm that one Prosper Kwame Eshun, 22, had been assaulted by some forestry officers at their workers’ bungalow.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Eshun had parked his motorcycle at the entrance of the forestry workers’ bungalow to buy something from a nearby lane. Upon returning, he noticed the position of his bike had been altered and suspected it had been tampered with. His attempt to inquire from three forestry officers present led to a confrontation, which quickly turned physical.
However, additional background information gathered indicates the situation was more complex. Sources say the motorcycle had been parked directly in front of the Forestry Commission office, obstructing access.
After officials were unable to locate the owner, they allegedly took custody of the motorbike and locked it inside the premises. When the owner returned and demanded its release, a disagreement escalated into an alleged assault on the man, who then left only to return later with a mob.
What followed was described by witnesses as a violent and coordinated attack. The mob, reportedly numbering over 100, descended on the Forestry Commission office, smashing vehicle windscreens, vandalizing official property, and breaking into storage facilities. Several pieces of confiscated mining equipment were allegedly carted away.
During the disturbance, a second victim, George Adu, 43, sustained gunshot wounds. The police statement confirmed that both victims are receiving medical attention.
The Western Central Regional Police Command has since brought the situation under control and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and the protection of life and property.
Authorities continue to monitor the area as investigations proceed.
