The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Kwame Amankra Appiah has refuted such claims that private schools in Ghana are better than public owned ones.

According to him, even though public schools are confronted with numerous challenges, they are better when compared to the public ones.

He opines public schools have well trained professionals and the best teaching practices and polices than their counterparts in the private sector.

He said this during a forum for an overview of the Education Strategic Plan (ESP) 2018 – 2030 in the Ashanti region.

“Private schools are not performing better than us. What we do at the public schools is holistic education. We have the best teachers, we have the best policies and practices. Our teachers are professionally trained unlike the SHS leavers that teach in the private schools,” he emphatically disclosed.

He called for a change in attitude by teachers in the public sector.

“As a teacher you shouldn’t expect your director to tell you to go to class. You opted to be a teacher and you must do what you are required to do. If you don’t teach and train the young ones professionally, we will all be affected by the mess in the future because the young ones are the future leaders so there is the need for a positive of attitude,” he said.

With recent cases of misconduct by SHS students, the educationist underscored the need to intensify counselling in the various second cycle institutions.

“Because of safe practices introduced in our schools, canning, weeding and other forms of corporal punishment have been stopped. So we are finding the best ways to handle recalcitrant students hence there is the need to intensify the counselling of our students,” he stated.
