A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Prof. Joshua Alabi, has explained why he led a delegation to the headquarters of the opposition NDC to pick nomination for John Dramani Mahama.

Addressing the media after picking the forms Wednesday, February 22, 2023, Prof. Alabi indicated the former President has what it takes to redeem Ghana from the precarious circumstances it currently finds itself.

The former Greater Accra regional minister who once contested John Mahama for flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress says they want him to lead the party and Ghana as a whole again because he is the one that factors the masses in decisions that bothers on the life of the people.

“If you’re coming out with a policy you have to factor in the people along. Fortunately for us in the NDC and in the country as a whole we have someone like that. We can’t afford to sit down while we have a very huge challenging task ahead of us. So we are here to pick his form and to work for him. Working for him is not working for him alone but to work for the NDC and to work for the people of Ghana,” he explained.

He said further that, “I am very confident that come January 2025, NDC will form the new government.”

John Mahama will be contesting for the flagbearer of the NDC for the third time after leading the party to the 2012 elections through a consensus following the demise of late President Mills whom he took over from.

He went ahead to win the 2016 and 2020 bids to become the party’s flagbearer but lost both general elections to Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP.

After serving his two terms of office, John Dramani Mahama will, for the first time be contesting a new candidate from the NPP rather than Akufo-Addo, should he be given the mandate as the NDC’s flagbearer.

Other candidates have expressed interest in contesting for the portfolio including a former Finance Minister under President Atta Mills, Kwabena Duffour, a former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, whose nomination has been picked today by one Bismark Tetteh, as well as Ernest Kwaku Kobeah, who appears to be a newbie, especially at the forefront of the party, also picking his forms today to contest the flagbearership position.
