Birmingham City have sacked manager Wayne Rooney after just 15 games in charge of the Championship club.

This was announced by the club on Tuesday, January 2.

Rooney was appointed as Birmingham City manager on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 to replace John Eustace, who was sacked under controversial circumstances.

Despite the Blues placed sixth in the table before Eustace’s replacement, they are 20th currently, losing 3-0 to Leeds United on Monday.

“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club,” Rooney said in a statement to announce his departure.

“Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be,” he added.

He conceded that it will take him some time to get over “this setback”.

The retired England international says he will take some time off to be with his family “as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager”.

Professional development coach Steve Spooner will take interim charge of the Blues.
