The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has demanded that swift action be taken against soldiers involved in the recent attack on a JoyNews reporter, Carlos Carlony.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, July 31, the GJA President cautioned the Chief of Army Staff that grave consequences will arise if no action is taken against these officers.
He threatened public exposure of the individuals involved and to further embarrass the Army if immediate steps were not taken to identify and sanction the soldiers.
“The military should understand that failure on their part to expose and sanction the perpetrators of this crime will have damning consequences, and we will embarrass them. If the military fails to expose the members, the Chief of Army Staff, we are not just serving notice. We are not threatened.
“We have done our work and we are prepared. If you fail to do so, we shall embarrass you. We will come out boldly and expose your men,” Dwumfour stated.
The incident occurred during coverage of demolition of a warehouse belonging to businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.
The JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony while interviewing an eyewitness was interrupted by military officers and some national security personnel who demanded that he stopped reporting on the demolition.
Mr. Carlony was further detained alongside Group CEO of McDan and three others, who were allegedly compelled to kneel.
According to Carlony, he received punches from behind by one of the military officers and has since visited the hospital where a number of scans had been conducted.
