The military has demolished structures around La Beach in Accra as part of an exercise to clear the area.

The ongoing demolition exercise is being carried out as a joint operation involving personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, alongside the Ghana Police Service.

Military personnel overseeing the operation have directed vendors and businesses operating within the resort area to vacate the premises to allow the demolition exercise to continue.

According to reports, the demolition exercise commenced in the early hours of Friday morning after security personnel arrived at the facility at about 4:00 a.m. and ordered residents and workers to vacate the premises.

Persons occupying the area said the demolition came unexpectedly.

Several structures at the La Pleasure Beach have since been completely pulled down, while others have been partially demolished.

The operation has, however, triggered concerns from La Dadekotopon MP, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, who confronted the military personnel at the site.

The lawmaker questioned why the exercise was being carried out without prior communication to her, saying she had previously been assured by government that the structures would not be demolished.

According to the MP, she had engaged relevant authorities over the matter and was therefore surprised to arrive at the site to find military personnel carrying out the demolition.

She also raised concerns about the manner in which the exercise was being conducted, alleging that some military personnel were firing shots and wielding firearms as they attempted to clear the area.

The MP questioned the need for what she described as a forceful approach to the exercise.

“What is it, do you want to kill us, what has La done?” she asked.

The demolition has led to tensions at the site as affected vendors and businesses are being asked to leave to make way for the ongoing clearance exercise.
