The former Member of Parliament for North Dayi, George Loh, has said the alternative source of drinking water –boreholes –are now contaminated with cemetery residues.

This, he said is after galamsey activities have destroyed most sources of water bodies in the country.

The former lawmaker expressed worry that because of the destruction of rivers and streams, so many companies are producing water claiming to be pure.

Mr. Loh, in an interview with Yaa Titi Okrah on Pae Mu Ka on Onua FM Monday, September 12, 2022 said Ghana is in deficit of potable water.

Producing clean and affordable water has been a major challenge for the Ghana Water Company Ltd. coupled with huge cost because of galamsey activities.

He noted the production of water has become lucrative springing up many companies. He added the numerous companies have come to augment the water deficit in the country, taking their sources from these boreholes which have become contaminated.

Mr. Loh bemoaned the lack of any mechanism or institution to check where these wells and boreholes are dug.

“Some bore holes are dug some few metres away from manholes, garbage sites among others which contaminate the underground water while our streams and rivers too have been laced with deadly chemicals such as cyanide,” he cried.

He further asserted the source of Ghana’s drinking water has become a death trap with waterborne diseases such as cancer, buruli ulcer amongst others.

“In a long term, if nothing is done to rescue this situation, the health implications will be overwhelming compared to the merits of the galamsey business,” he concluded.
