The Government in collaboration with the Gbeho and related families, has announced that a state funeral will be held in honour of the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho.
The state funeral has been slated for Friday, July 31, 2026, at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.
The state burial is in recognition of Ambassador Gbeho’s distinguished service to Ghana and the international community over several decades.
In a statement issued on July 29 and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government described the late diplomat as one of Ghana’s most accomplished statesmen whose career was marked by exceptional public service.
Ambassador Gbeho rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as Chief Director, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, and later Minister for Foreign Affairs.
His diplomatic career also extended beyond Ghana, serving as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia before becoming President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he played a key role in advancing regional integration and diplomacy in West Africa.
The government expressed its deepest condolences to the Gbeho family and acknowledged Ambassador Gbeho’s lasting contributions to Ghana’s foreign policy and international diplomacy.
The state funeral is expected to bring together government officials, diplomats, traditional leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, family, friends and the general public to pay their final respects to the late statesman.
Ambassador James Victor Gbeho died on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91.
