Chiefs and residents of Tebu and Atoman communities in the Ga South municipality of the Greater Accra Region are waging a demonstration against the activities of land guards in the area.
Three of the residents were shot by the land guards on Friday, June 14, 2024, leading to the death of one.
The residents, together with their chiefs, Tuesday morning staged a demonstration and called on the IGP to come to their aid since most of the police officers in the area, according to them, have been bribed by the land guards.
Gabriel Alekye died as a result of the Friday shooting, with the residents calling on the police to halt the ongoing terrorism in the area.
“We need correct police officers to come and rescue us because some of the officers have taken bribes and they are not able to help us,” a furious young lady lamented to Onua News’ Nana Yaw Asare.
Another resident noted that “the land guards have been seizing people’s monies. Nana Addo and Bawumia must come here.”
“Land guards are killing people here. They should come and help us else we won’t vote. The police have taken monies from them so they can’t arrest them,” another continued.
According to this woman, “we are giving the police up to Monday, if they are not able to arrest them, they will hear from us. They will know some women are more powerful than men.”
“Papa Nii sent some people here to brutalise us. He claims he has bought the whole place. Yesterday they chased me out of the toilet and I couldn’t even clean myself after defecating. We were born here and now Papa Nii wants to evacuate us all from this place. The government should stop him,” a distressed young man stated.
The traditional leaders in the community have also lamented the to the police for allowing such heinous crimes to prevail in the community despite sending a petition to the IGP over the unfortunate development in the area.
“The land guards were led by the police to come and arrest our people. We want to find out from the IGP who fired the gunshots, whether it was our people, the police or land guards. We wrote a petition to them (Police) and up till now we haven’t heard from them again. They taking people’s money, motorbikes and a whole lot.
“Even yesterday they shot three people and one has died. So we are informing the IGP to investigate the issue because we don’t want the regional commander into this because he is aware of the matter. The land guards have told us we can’t do anything to them because they have bribed their way out with the police,” one chief lamented.
