Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, is asserting the arrest of one of its members, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, is politically motivated.
The Party’s Communications Director says the arrest of the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s aide has no basis.
Speaking on the BigIssue segment on the NewDay morning show on TV3 Monday, July 13, 2026, he said the party is yet to know why Miracles Aboagye has been arrested by EOCO.
“Our understanding is that EOCO has him. Why they have him, we don’t know. Whether there is a basis for that drama, it’s clear to me that there is no basis for it,” he stated.
He accused the government of denying Mr. Aboagye access to his lawyers, indicating he has not been given the opportunity to speak to them.
“In a democracy where people should have a right to access their lawyers in situations like this, this government decides to deny him that right. They deem it a privilege that when they please, they will allow him. So till now, he hasn’t spoken to his lawyers from what we understand,” he disclosed.
His comments come on the back of the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Aboagye was allegedly picked up at the Accra International Airport on Saturday night, July 11, 2026.
In a post on his Facebook same day, Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the NPP, alleged that EOCO arrested their party member with assistance of immigration officials where he was taken into custody.
Mr. Kodua Frimpong added that Aboagye’s lawyers were denied access to him, while his whereabouts remain unknown. He further alleged that no charges have been filed against him.
Citing provisions of Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution on the rights of persons in custody, the NPP General Secretary called on authorities to grant Mr. Aboagye unrestricted access to his lawyers and family.
According to him, the arrest is an intimidation rather than a lawful enforcement action, alleging it forms part of a pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeting members of the party.
He advised against state institutions against being used as political tools to score political vendettas, admonishing public agencies to operate within the limits of the law and uphold constitutional protections.
While demanding the release of Mr. Aboagye, the party leadership has also disclosed its intentions of massing up at the premises of EOCO to demand explanation for his arrest.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kumadoe says security officers play by rules of engagement.
“There are standard rules of engagement, and there is a procedure when it comes to arresting people, particularly when prosecution is on the table and they deal more with their lawyers, families rather than their political parties,” he stated.
