The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has no moral authority to call for the dismissal of heads of Ghana’s drug interdiction chain.
Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, says the NPP’s own record in managing narcotics cases is worse.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in reaction to the NPP’s call for the dismissal of heads of institutions in the drug interdiction chain over recent cocaine seizures, Tanko Computer said the NPP should be ignored.
“The NPP should be ignored completely. They don’t have a better history when it comes to managing narcotics in the country,” he said.
Tanko Computer cited the case of former NPP MP for Nkoranza North, Eric Amoateng, who was busted with drugs while in office, as well as the MV Benjamin cocaine saga, questioning why they didn’t call for the heads of those who were manning the narcotic interdiction chain.
He also recalled that cocaine exhibits at the police headquarters turned into kokonte under the NPP administration.
“You remember the issue of MV Benjamin, the cocaine saga that came from Ada port, that huge consignment of cocaine that was busted under their regime and they even formed a committee to investigate it led by the then Chief Justice, it turned to be ‘kokonte‘ (cassava flour) in police headquarters, unprecedented in the history of Ghana,” he said.
Tanko Computer questioned why the NPP were mute at the time a sitting MP was arrested with cocaine, but has the moral right to question why some leaders are still at post after making some narcotic arrests.
“When Eric Amoateng, an NPP sitting Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North was busted with drugs, did they call for the removal of their institutional heads? At that time, they were in office, did they call it?
“That’s why I’m saying that they should shut up! They have no better history when it comes to these things and we are not going to learn anything from them,” he added.
The NDC official was responding to NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, who earlier on Tuesday, accused President John Dramani Mahama of weak leadership and demanded the dismissal of about nine officials over recent drug interceptions.
The recent cases include the interception of a truck at Abofu on Tuesday carrying 175 slabs of suspected narcotics from Kpandai to Accra, the seizure of 192 wraps of suspected cocaine at Wa, and the 866 parcels intercepted at Tema Port concealed in sacks of gari.
