The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has agreed to consult its general membership on the immediate suspension of its strike following talks with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and Vice-Chancellors of technical universities.
The decision was contained in a joint communiqué issued on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after a meeting between GTEC, the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities, Ghana (VCTU-G), and TUTAG to resolve the issues underpinning the industrial action.
The parties agreed that TUTAG would consult its members and immediately suspend the strike while efforts continued to address the outstanding concerns.
“TUTAG shall consult its general membership and immediately suspend the strike while efforts are made to address the other outstanding concerns raised,” the joint communiqué said.
The strike was triggered by three main issues: the non-payment of staff engaged on post-retirement contracts, changes to the promotion requirements for assistant lecturers, and the classification of academic librarians as academic staff.
At the end of deliberations, the parties agreed as follows: 3
Post-Retirement Contract Staff: The parties noted that the resolution of this matter rests with the Honourable Minister for Finance. GTEC shall accordingly take steps to facilitate a meeting between the parties and the Honourable Minister for Finance, including VCTU-G, to resolve the matter, not later than November 14, 2026.
Amended Scheme of Service: GTEC agreed to grant a concession to all affected staff who held the rank of Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Rèsearch Fellow and qualified based on the promotion criteria of the universities, before the issuance of the directive dated July 31, 2025, exempting them from the PhD requirement for progression to the rank of Lecturer.
Classification of Library Staff as Academic Staff: GTEC indicated that it is not, in principle, opposed to the position of TUTAG. Therefore, the parties agreed that the National President of the University Librarians Association should provide a technical paper for consideration and implementation.
The communiqué said the parties remained committed to dialogue and collaboration to promote industrial harmony and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of teaching and learning in technical universities.
It was signed by GTEC Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai; VCTU-G Chairman, Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah; and TUTAG National President, Professor Deodat Emilson Aderiutsi.
The meeting was held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the instance of GTEC.
