The Ghana Police Service has said an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has disrupted a suspected armed robbery gang operating along the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway, leading to the deaths of two suspects and the arrest of several others.
According to police, the operation, carried out on March 10 and 11, 2026, followed credible intelligence that a group of armed men had assembled in a bush along the highway in preparation for a robbery attack.
Police officers deployed to the area encountered four armed suspects. The suspects reportedly opened fire and attempted to escape, prompting officers to return fire. Two of the suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange, while the remaining two managed to flee.
The deceased suspects were identified as David Aheto
Police said items retrieved from the scene included an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, a pump-action gun with five rounds of BB cartridges, eight additional rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, and a spent BB cartridge.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects were linked to a series of robbery incidents in Obuasi, Dunkwa, Wasa Akropong, and Assin Fosu.
Police intelligence further indicated that Samuel Agyei, also known as Africa and currently on remand in Wasa Akropong, is believed to be associated with the gang.
Investigators also allege that Abdalah Alhassan, also known as Alhaji Abdalah of Asawase in Kumasi, sold the recovered AK-47 rifle to the gang for GH¢45,000 and supplied additional firearms to the group.
A follow-up operation on March 11 led to the arrest of Aminu Iddrisu, also known as 0244, who reportedly led police to a hidden AK-47 rifle and a Bruni pistol concealed in a sheep pen at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi.
Another suspect, Daniel Debrah, 24, was also arrested, and a search uncovered a red Toyota Corolla suspected to have been acquired with proceeds from the gang’s robbery activities.
Police said suspects Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman alias Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu alias 0244, and Daniel Debrah are currently in custody assisting with investigations. Authorities are also pursuing other suspects, including Mallam Aminu, who are believed to be on the run.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating armed robbery and illegal firearms trafficking, warning that all individuals involved in such criminal activities will be pursued
