Approximately 1,000 girls and 100 teachers in Ghana’s Upper West Region are set to participate in a two-week intensive training programme.
This initiative aims to empower these girls with digital skills such as web design, cybersecurity, coding, and game and animation development, preparing them for future careers in technology and innovation.
At the opening ceremony of the Training of Trainers (ToT) event on Monday, September 8, 2025, the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., emphasised that the training is not solely about imparting ICT knowledge, but also about preparing teachers to become facilitators of digital empowerment for the young girls in their care.
“In today’s interconnected world, ICT is the backbone of every economy and society. No nation can thrive if half its population is left behind in the digital transformation. It is against this background that the government is training you so that you can, in turn, train our girls to succeed in our interconnected world today,” the Minister stated.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations with support from the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), and the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence, is part of a broader national effort to bridge the gender gap in technology and promote equal access to digital opportunities for girls and young women.
In a speech delivered on behalf of the sector minister, Austin Hesse, the Director of Policy Planning and M&E at the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, disclosed that over 15,981 girls and 1,292 teachers across Ghana will benefit from this project.
Meanwhile, Abdul Razak Korah, the Upper West Regional Director of Education, shared that the “Girls-In-ICT” digital skills project is expected to bring together participants across all 11 Metropolitan, Municipal, and Districts in the region.
He urged the beneficiary trainers to work diligently to surpass the achievements of the Volta Region and other regions. “Upper West is the second cohort to benefit from this programme. So please have faith; we are committed to performing well,” Korah encouraged.
Launched in 2012, the Girls-In-ICT Initiative aims to create a supportive environment for girls and young women to explore studies and careers in the rapidly growing ICT sector.
The 2025 programme will take place across three regions: Volta, Upper East, and Upper West.
