Captain Smart says galamsey kills at least 54 people in Ghana daily.

He analyses his assertion with the number of pits that have caved-in from 1994 till date, as well as some shooting incidents and others occurrences that have claimed lives at various galamsey sites.

Also, the number of cancer cases diagnosed on a daily basis with its accompanying fatality according Mr. Smart all contribute to the figures he mentioned.

Speaking on Onua TV/FM’s morning show, Maakye, Thursday, October 6, 2022, Captain Smart analysed the daily lives illegal mining was claiming from the times of former president Rawlings through the entire Fourth Republic.

Over 1,400 pits have caved in according to the broadcaster, with the least disastrous claiming at least 17 lives.

Also, there have been almost a thousand (1,000) shooting incidents at galamsey sites with 3 persons dying at least in each of the shootouts.

“During the time of Rawlings, galamsey was killing 20 people daily. Kufuor’s time it rose to 32. Atta-Mills managed it at 35 and it shot to 38 at Mahama’s time. And as we speak in Nana Addo’s time, 54 people are dying daily,” he said.

He added that, “from 1994 to 3 weeks ago, the number of galamsey pits that have caved in are 1,444. The one that killed the least were 17 and president Mills even went there.

“There have been shooting 999 times at galamsey sites and the one that took the least lives killed 3 persons. This happened at Oppong Boanuh’s time,” he elaborated.
