A 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunateh, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour by the Wa High Court for the defilement of a 7-year-old boy in Wa, in the Upper West region.

According to press statement issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, the conviction was secured through the Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).

The Police said the convict was arrested on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother. The incident is said to have occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Upon receiving the report, the Police commenced investigations immediately and referred the victim to a medical facility for examination.
The victim was also provided with psychosocial support. The accused was later arraigned before the Wa High Court and remanded into police custody.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, July 23, 2026, His Lordship Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found Elyasu Kunateh guilty of the offence and handed him a 10-year jail term in Hard Labour.

In the statement signed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, the Command assured the public of its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons.

“The Command will continue to pursue all reported cases of child abuse, sexual and gender-based violence,” the release stated.

The Police further urged parents, guardians, caregivers and the general public to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station for immediate action.
