The Head of Public Relations at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has made a case for the delay in the release of some withheld results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The Council has withheld results of some candidates citing ongoing investigations into alleged malpractices that characterised the examination.

Mr. Kapi has defended the act reemphasising the need to ensuring a fair and thorough process to uphold the integrity of the examination.

He was responding to a one-week ultimatum by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to the examination body to release the withheld results or face nationwide protests.

NUGS had also demanded the ousting of WAEC Ghana’s National Head, citing what it describes as his unfair treatment of the candidates accused of malpractice.

Mr. Kapi said on Accra-based JoyNews Tuesday, February 04, 2025, that the Council is committed to a credible system where only deserving candidates would be awarded grades.

“We need to sit down and probably bring on board a number of stakeholders to decide on this issue so that we are awarding grades to people who deserve them,” he stated.

The WAEC PRO’s explanation, has, nonetheless, done little to appease NUGS and other stakeholders, who argue that the prolonged delay is causing undue stress and uncertainty for affected students.

NUGS has vowed to mobilise students across the country for protests if WAEC fails to meet its demands within the one-week deadline.
