Claims that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is planning on relocating its headquarters to neighbouring Nigeria is not true.
The examination body for basic and secondary education in the West African sub-region it has not made any intentions of moving its head office to Nigeria as being speculated.
The clarification comes on the back of recent media reports which said the WAEC is planning on relocation of its head office to Nigeria.
It was reported that the decision was being taken as a result of Ghana government’s indebtedness to WAEC which has affected its operations, prompting discussions about a potential relocation.
But the Head of Public Relations for WAEC, John Kapi, has refuted these reports, stating that no such decision has been made.
“There hasn’t been any discussion in this direction. So the law that established WAEC indicates that the headquarters of the WAEC will be situated here in Accra.
“Ever since there has not been any change to that. So, I guess that we cannot confirm that we have not had any such discussions and there are no plans as such,” he said.
WAEC reported of the government’s indebtedness to them which made it difficult for them to organise the 2024 examination and onward marking for both BECE and WASSCE candidates.
But the government settled part of the debt which made it possible for the exam to be conducted.
