Political Analyst and Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has charged government to put in measures to ensure accountability and transparency among state-owned enterprises.
His comment follows the recent financial malfeasance uncovered by a forensic audit of state-owned enterprises by the Auditor-General as well as the corruption-related offences discovered to have been committed by appointees in the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points, Saturday, November 1, 2025, Dr. Zaato urged government to empower the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) to deal with this embezzlement in state-owned enterprises.
“There’s a lot to be done and my friend Prof. Kpessa Whyte who is the Director-General of SIGA has a lot to do to make sure that accountability, transparency, answerability within these SOEs is respected.
“He has a lot to do to make sure that they are held accountable. I support the President and I can see his tendency to want to send people to Nsawam but Mr. President you can’t do that. You don’t have the power to do that, the courts will do that. But the courts, yes establish all of them,” he stated.
He suggested to government to strictly enforce punitive measures such as imprisonment, retrieval of funds, reduction in ranks to tone down on these financial irregularities recorded every year.
President Mahama has also announced plans to establish special courts to expedite the handling of cases arising from audit infractions identified in the Auditor-General’s Report.
This decision was reached following a high-level meeting on Monday, October 20, 2025, between the President John Dramani Mahama, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, and the Auditor-General.
The meeting focused on measures to strengthen the enforcement of findings contained in the Auditor-General’s Report.
