The Speaker of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has said he will hold the Executive arm of government accountable for their promises to Ghanaians.

He says the government entered a social contract with the people who surrendered their sovereignty to them by voting them into power, and it is incumbent upon them to ensure those promises are fulfilled.

According to Bagbin, he will speak out, should the government go back on the promises it made to Ghanaians before gaining power.

The Speaker was addressing a Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire, as part of his diplomatic mission to strengthen ties between Ghana and her neighbours on the West when he made the comments.

Citing the President’s promise of having a lean government with 60 ministers, for instance, Mr. Bagbin noted that he is closely monitoring the Executive to ensure they don’t renege on it.

He explained that the Legislature will put the government on its toes to ensure the promises are fulfilled since governance requires vigilance to run effectively.

“We will hold the executive accountable for their promises. For instance, we’re committed to establishing a women’s bank, which will provide credit at very low interest rates. If they attempt to renege on this promise, I won’t hesitate to speak out.

“I’m also monitoring the size of the cabinet 60 ministers is the maximum, and appointing more than 60 is minus one we are marking them. This is how we ensure the government delivers on its promises.

“Effective governance requires constant vigilance, not just voting and then disengaging. We mean business, and we expect the government to do the same,” he explained.

Bagbin also promised to ensure the anti-gay bill is passed even if it will cost him personally.
