A couple [who are yet to be identified] has been critically injured in a vehicular accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon around TACOTEL, on the Effia Nkwanta Hospital-Takoradi Road.

They were on board their private Volkswagen Golf with registration number WR-3230-11, heading towards Takoradi, when a bullion van crashed into the rear of their car.

The impact caused the Golf to skid off the road and somersault. However, this did not cause the driver of the bullion van to stop. It sped off, and a second bullion van, which was right behind, never stopped to check on the passengers who had just been hit.

The overturned VW Golf

Eyewitnesses say the bullion van was speeding and hit the Golf in an attempt to overtake it from the exit lane of the road.

“Two bullion vans were speeding on the road. The Golf was running in its lane when the bullion van hit it at the tail. The couple in that car have been wounded… the man has a deep cut on his forehead and parts of his face. The wife sustained some cuts on her hand and little finger.

“The driver who hit the car didn’t even stop to check on them. The second one also drove past. That is heartless. We hurriedly pulled them out of the car and sent them to Effia Nkwanta Hospital,” eyewitnesses narrated to Connect 97.1 FM’s reporter in Takoradi.

In the meantime, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has been notified of the accident. Eyewitnesses are urging the police to track down and arrest the driver of the bullion van for dangerous driving.
