Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, that Leo Messi, who received his eighth Ballon d’Or award on Monday, should serve as an inspiration to the “Brazilian youth” who have not won anything for a long time.

His comments were taken as criticism to a golden generation of players, including Neymar, who have not won any such recognition.

“It is not possible that Messi does not serve as an example to Brazilian players,” said the progressive leader, a well-known soccer fan, in his weekly social media broadcast.

“A 36-year-old player, playing in the United States league, was world champion last year and this year he won the Ballon d’Or again.”

His attitude makes the difference

Brazil’s head of state highlighted the professionalism of the Argentine star and his dedication even when currently playing in a less competitive league, citing attributes that, in his opinion, seem to be lacking in Brazilian revelations who disappear as quickly as they are discovered.

“Messi has to be an inspiration for the Brazilian lads, for those young players who appear, are transferred abroad at the age of 16 or 17 and then disappear,” he said.

According to the politician, Messi’s victories have to impress Brazilian players and make them understand that an idol has to be professional, be dedicated and set an example.

“Winning the Ballon d’Or is for professionals and does not combine with partying, with night parties. If you don’t set an example, you’re not good for much,” he said, referring to some Brazilian players but without mentioning any of them.

What went wrong?

According to the president, the Brazilian revelations transferred to Europe at a very young age perhaps lack psychological structure or have too much vanity to remain competitive.

Lula recalled that the Brazilian national team has not won a world title for almost 22 years and has no real idol.

“We haven’t won anything for 22 years and the way we are, if we don’t become aware that we have to improve and be more serious and responsible, we are going to go much longer without winning,” he said.
