The Ghana Police Service has arrested one suspect following yesterday’s bloody clash between Asawinso community members and some alleged macho men that led to the death of one person leaving six others injured.

According to a press release by the Western North Regional Commander of the Service, “On Monday 181h May 2026, at about 3:00 p.m. the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Divisional Command received information that some people had attacked a mining site within the Afao Hills Forest Reserve near Sefwi Asawinso A’.”

“A Police team led by the District Commander and the Divisional Crime Officer proceeded to the Anhwiaso Community hospital, where victims of the incident were receiving treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Kwesi Ayim II, Odikro of Sefwi Asawinso ‘A’, together with some youth from the community allegedly proceeded to the area following information that illegal mining activities were ongoing within the forest reserve. Upon arrival at the site, they reportedly encountered some people actively engaged in illegal mining activities,” the statement further stated.

According to the statement “During the encounter, a misunderstanding ensued, following which a group of men armed with firearms and cutlasses allegedly attacked Nana Kwesi Ayim ll and his team. Five people sustained various degrees of gunshot and cutlass wounds. One victim, identified as Kwame Ayisi aged 38 years was pronounced dead on arrival at the Anhwiaso Community hospital. The deceased’s body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy. The injured persons are positively responding to treatment.”

The Police named the arrested suspect as Isaac Badu a.k.a Obede.

“Suspect lsaac Badua. k. a Obede is the kingpin that planned and executed the illegal attack on the victims. The suspect is currently in custody and assisting the ongoing investigations. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest all accomplices involved in the attack,” it said.

The Police Command cautioned the public against resorting to violence in the resolution of disagreements and urged all individuals with relevant information to volunteer the same to the Police.

The Regional Police Command assured the public that the situation is under control and that adequate security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order within the affected communities.
