The Western North Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has presented relief items to victims of a domestic fire outbreak at Merewa in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality.
The gesture, made on Friday, May 1, 2026, was carried out on behalf of the President of the Republic and the Director-General of NADMO, as part of efforts to support affected residents and help them recover from the disaster.
The fire incident, which occurred on April 24, 2026, completely destroyed a six-bedroom house, leaving several people displaced, including children. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Following the incident, NADMO officials conducted a rapid assessment to determine the extent of damage and the immediate needs of the victims. The agency subsequently mobilised relief support to assist the affected households.
Items donated to the victims included roofing sheets, mattresses, plastic basins, cups, buckets, and insect repellents.
The Regional Director also presented food items such as bags of rice, maize, and cooking oil to help cushion the immediate impact of the incident on the affected families.
According to NADMO, the intervention is aimed at alleviating the suffering of the victims and providing temporary relief as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Some of the victims expressed gratitude to NADMO for the timely intervention, describing the support as a lifeline after losing their belongings in the fire.
“We lost everything in the fire, including our clothes and household items. These relief items will go a long way to help us start again. We are very grateful to NADMO for coming to our aid,” one of the victims said.
“Life has been very difficult for us since the incident, especially with the children. This support has brought us some comfort, and we appreciate the quick response,” another victim noted.
Others also appealed for continued support as they work to rebuild their lives.
“We are thankful for what we have received today, but we are appealing for more assistance to help us rebuild our home,” an affected resident added.
Addressing residents who had gathered at the scene, the Regional Director also used the opportunity to educate the public on fire safety, particularly in relation to electrical hazards.
“We urge all residents to be mindful of how they use electrical appliances. Many of these domestic fires can be prevented if we take simple safety precautions. NADMO remains committed to responding swiftly to support communities in times of distress,” she stated.
She further assured the victims and the wider community of NADMO’s continued readiness to respond to emergencies.
