The Bawkunaba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has expressed confidence in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as unifier who can help secure a permanent resolution to the conflict at Bawku that has cost many lives and properties

During the Vice President’s visit to the Naba and his elders Tuesday, December 12, 2023, he said resolving the conflict in Bawku was one of the pillars upon which the Vice President’s vision for development would hing.

After keenly observing Dr. Bawumia’s political journey over the years, the Bawkunaba said the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 flab bearer has what it takes to ameliorate the prolong disturbance that has destabilised the peace in the area over the years.

“I have a firm belief that if you become President, you’ll want to preside over a peaceful nation and a peaceful Kusaal traditional area that would support your vision for development. It is my belief that you have what it takes to help bring this conflict to an end to help save lives and property.

“I have keenly observed your progress in politics and you have demonstrated humility, respect, calmness, unity and genuine commitment to people which are good traits for leadership,” the speech which was read on behalf of the Bawku overlord contained in parts.

“I therefore want to appeal to you to bring all appropriate steps to bring peace to Bawku. This is a task I am assigning you and I have no doubt that you can and you will successfully deliver to the glory of Kusaal and Mamprugu in particular and Ghana as a whole,” he charged.

On his part, the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia said he was poised to end the milieu at Bawku should he be elected President of Ghana. He expressed pain over the disagreement that has ensued between the two factions, –Kusasis and Mamprusis –adding that development of the human resource in the area should be the focus of the residents rather than conflict that has cost them so much.

“As a son of the North, I am very pained by the conflict that we have in Bawku between Kusasis and Mamprusis over Chieftaincy. This conflict has led to needless loss of lives and disrupted economic activity and development in Bawku. It is really sad. Fundamentally, we are really one people. We have inter-married over the years and our languages are very similar.

“Fighting and killing each other can never resolve it. And I should also state that under the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, no government can impose or use force to settle a Chieftaincy dispute,” Dr. Bawumia added.

He assured of resolving the issue to ensure peace and prosperity.

“The problem our people face is poverty and underdevelopment. As president, in shaa Allah, I will contribute immensely to uplifting our people from poverty and underdevelopment,” he assured.
