President John Dramani Mahama has asked the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure he discharges his duties with integrity without discrimination.

John Mahama has asked the new police chief to, as part of his duties, ensure that discipline and integrity are instilled in the Service.

During the swearing-in ceremony of COP Yohuno as new IGP at the Jubilee House Friday, March 14, 2025, the President further charged him to ensure the police is positioned to meet trending needs of society.

President Mahama indicated that the police work with the tenets of the service to gain the trust of the public.

“They (Ghanaians) want to trust that the police service will act in their best interests, free from undue influence and without discrimination. To achieve this, IGP, your leadership must be rooted in integrity, discipline, and innovation. The Ghana Police Service must continue to reform itself to meet the needs of our ever-changing society,” he stated.

According to Mahama, “intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and effective deployment of modern technology must be at the core of our law enforcement strategy”, to spearhead the reforms needed in the service to meet the changing needs of society.

The President also charged the new IGP to ensure the officers are given the needed training and requisite accoutrements to deliver effectively.

“Our officers must be well-trained, well-equipped, and motivated to serve with excellence.”

The President also established the need to ensure the officers build a good relationship with the communities they are tasked to serve to build the trust of the public, which he says is paramount in enhancing community policing.

“One critical area that requires immediate attention is the relationship between the police service and the communities in which they serve. Public trust in law enforcement is essential. Without it, effective policing becomes difficult. The concept of community policing must be strengthened,” he stated.
