A 2028 flag bearer hopeful of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has criticised his fellow contenders, stating they lack a proper economic strategy to lead the country effectively if elected.

According to Agyapong, any economic plan centred on negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is bound to fail from scratch.

The vociferous former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, in a post on X Saturday, September 6, 2025, stated that poor leadership and weakened economic policies have led to Ghana’s reliance on the IMF over the years.

He emphasised that anyone who claims to be a capable leader by touting their negotiation skills with the IMF lacks the necessary expertise to steer the economy and should not be given the mandate to lead.

“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” he posted.

He shared that he has what it takes to create jobs and improve the lives of the citizenry to build Ghana’s economy to the level where the IMF will become irrelevant to the nation’s survival.

“My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant,” he stated.

Many have interpreted the former lawmaker’s comments as a jab at former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the Economic Management Team and took Ghana to the IMF.

Dr. Bawumia, after losing the 2024 polls with the NPP’s worst performance ever in any election since the Fourth Republic, is seeking to be retained by the party as its presidential candidate for the December 2028 election, where Ken Agyapong is contesting him for the second time.

The NPP’s presidential primary is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
