President of the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education (CPE) Franklin Cudjoe has asserted that the two-term office granted the government of President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a waste of Ghanaians’ time.

He says the President’s call in 2016 asking the citizenry to “try” him with the promise of changing the fortunes of the country in few months after assuming office was a mere talk.

During the 2016 electioneering campaign, then candidate Akufo-Addo promised to change Ghana in 18 months if he is elected President. But according to Mr. Cudjoe, things have become worse than they used to be 7 years into Mr. Akufo-Addo’s government.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, October 14, 2023, Mr. Cudjoe posted a screenshot of a publication of the President’s November 2016 campaign promise that, “I will change Ghana in 18 months if you vote for me.”

Following his subsequent winning of the polls and retaining the seat in the 2020 elections, the IMANI Boss thinks the tenure of President Akufo-Addo has been a waste of time.

He, mischievously, lauded the President for ‘delivering’ on his promise to Ghanaians to change the country in just a year and a half, before adding that the period has been a waste.

A caption he added to the screenshot of the President’s promise said: “Of course, he has delivered. Changed Ghana from what we could live with to what we cannot even recognise. Just wasted our time kwa.”

The high cost of living being experienced by Ghanaians occasioned by the increasing inflation and the depreciation of the Cedi has made life unbearable for many people recently, accounting for countless protests against the government to better the lives of the citizens.

Citizens became angrier after the Bank of Ghana, despite the economic challenges and they themselves running on a negative equity and a loss of GHC60.8 billion, has still committed US$250 million to construct a new head office.

Meanwhile, the government has blamed the two external shocks in 2020 –Russian invasion of Ukraine and Covid-19 pandemic –as cause of the challenges. A US$3billion bailout has been sought from the International Monetary  Fund (IMF) to help curtail the problems with the second tranche of US$600 million in progress after the first one was credited to the government’s account.
