A 22-year-old man, Jebril Hamidu, has been found dead after reportedly drowning in an abandoned ‘galamsey’ pit in Juaboso, Western North region.

According to police reports, on the morning of Sunday, June 1, 2025, at about 9:00am, Hamidu Azumah and Abednego Anyim, both residents of Sefwi Antobia, informed the Juaboso Police that their relative, Jebril Hamidu, had been missing since May 31, 2025.

They stated that he left home around 2:00am that day to search for gold but had not returned.

In response, the police organised a search operation. Later that same day, at around 5:30pm, the search team discovered Jebril’s body in an abandoned mining pit filled with water and grass.

The body was found in a decomposing state, alongside a gold detector machine believed to belong to the deceased.

A waist bag retrieved from the scene contained a mobile phone and GH¢250 in cash. According to the police, there were no signs of external injuries, and all body parts were intact.

The body has since been transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Eyewitnesses in the area reported that there had been heavy rainfall the night before, resulting in flooding.

It is suspected that Jebril accidentally fell into the water-filled pit and drowned.

The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
