Three persons have been killed at Bawku near the Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region. The assailants have not been identified yet.

According to Onua News’ Upper East Regional Correspondent, Mohammed Rabiu Tanko, the three were returning from a programme from Bolga.

On their return to Bawku, they were stopped, shot and killed. He reports further that the deceases had cutlass wounds on them, signifying they were butchered after the gunshots.

Even though the police are yet to make an official statement on the issue, they have assured residents of Bawku to stay calm since measures have been put in place to ensure their maximum safety.

However, Rabiu reports also that, the Kusasis and Mamprusis had prayed at this year’s Mecca for peace to prevail in Bawku.

They expressed happiness after their prayer, hoping that Allah had heeded to their cry, to instil peace amongst the Kusasis and Mamprugus in Bawku.

The incident, therefore came as a surprise to them according to Rabiu, who was present in Mecca during their prayer.

Prior to this incident, the Bawku Midwifery Training College was closed down before this murder. Police are investigating the issue as no arrest has been made yet.

Meanwhile, the Bawku chapter of the Mamprugu Youth Association have issued a statement condemning the act.

The youth say this is the fourth time such incident has happened in five months along the same stretch.

But the police and the RegSec which the regional minister chairs, have not made any attempt to secure those routes, accusing the minister of showing no concern because he is a tribesman of the oppresor.

MAMPRUGU YOUTH ASSOCIATION – BAWKU CHAPTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

16/08/2022

CONDEMNATION OF THE KILLING OF 3 PEOPLE AROUND BAWKU SECONDARY SCHOOL BY KUSASI BANDITS/TERRORISTS

The Mamprugu Youth Association wishes to condemn the killing of 3 people (1 Mamprusi Fatawu Ibrahim, 1 Bissa Ibrahim Abdulai and 1 Hausa Bunyaminu Adam by tribes) on the afternoon of 16/08/2022 between the hours of 2:45 pm and 3:00 pm. The deceased who were traveling in public transport from Bolga to Bawku were stopped around Bawku Secondary School which is a Kusasi-dominated settlement and shot dead whilst injuring the driver of the vehicle.

This afternoon’s incident marks over 4 separate attacks in less than 5 months along the same stretch of the Bolga – Bawku road. In this regard, the simple question that requires answers is how difficult is it for the relevant authorities to police and secure this stretch of the road that has been used to kill and maim citizens of this country?

We believe that the constant insecurity on the road and the lack of action by the Regional Minister who is the Chairman of the Regional Security Council gives credence to suggestions that these attacks are been perpetuated because the criminals feel protected by the Regional Minister who is their tribesman. It is in this regard that we have for several months now appealed to Government to at least reassign the Regional Minister to a different region it does not want to sack him from Government.

We call on the security agencies to as a matter of urgency bring these criminals whose activities qualify to be described as terrorism to book immediately. We also urge the security agencies to as a matter of urgency dismantle the illegal lorry station and market at “Highways” which have been used as a point for these terrorist attacks.
