Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has disclosed that, until his outfit’s issues with residents of Krobo in the Eastern region few years ago, it wouldn’t know that people could connect to the national grid without their knowledge.
He says people who are dwelling in newly developed areas are able to get connected to the national grid with the help of their electricians without turning the transformers off to alert the ECG.
According to him, the development has always put the company in a catch up business which is affecting revenue generation.

Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3 Sunday, September 08, 2024, Mr. Mahama maintained that there needs to be a proper conversation on the whole reforms the Company is seeking to do to ensure they don’t run at losses.
He mentioned some areas in the capital where people, through their electricians, got connected to the national grid without contacting the ECG or showing any signs which ordinarily takes precedence to ensure power connection is done without any risks.
“We are identifying people that are on the grid that we never even knew of. I keep saying this. Areas like Tse Addo, Oyarifa, Amasaman, Medie, Community 25 have grown at a very fast rate that people have joined the grid with no recourse to ECG, thanks to their own electricians.
“If it hadn’t been for our issues in Krobo, we wouldn’t have known that average people could actually put customers on a transformer without not turning the customer or the transformer off. We are in a business where we are always playing catch up but we are at a point where we realize that no we need to be a few steps ahead and those are the reforms that we are doing now,” he told host, Keminni Amanor.
