The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims that protesters involved in the ‘Democracy Hub’ demonstration were coerced into recreating their protest activities at the 37 intersection.
In a statement, the Police dismissed the allegations made by the accused individuals’ legal team, stating they were baseless.
The Police explained that the process of crime scene reconstruction is a globally recognized investigative method and has long been part of their standard procedures.
“This technique has been in use by the Ghana Police Service for years and complies fully with our established practices,” the statement read.
The officers conducting the reconstruction, according to the Police, were part of the original investigative team. “Therefore, assertions that they were unfamiliar to the accused are inaccurate,” the statement clarified.
Additionally, the Police noted that the accused were informed of their legal rights and allowed to have lawyers present during the process. However, some chose to participate without legal representation.
The Police further addressed previous accusations from the protest organizers, including the arrest of a 12-year-old child and a pregnant woman, describing those as falsehoods.
“We view this as another attempt to mislead the public, and we urge everyone to disregard it,” the Police said.
This comes as tensions surrounding the protest continue to rise, with Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the lead organizer, being denied bail.
