The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to undertake a mass vaccination campaign against the spread of cholera from today, Sunday, December 15, to Thursday, December 19, 2024, within four MMDAs in the Western region.
The decision follows the growing number of cholera cases and deaths being recorded in parts of the country especially in the Western and Central regions.
Already, eight MMDAs in the Western region have been hit with the outbreak, with 908 cases and 10 deaths recorded.
A little over 600,000 residents, two years and above, excluding pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in the Shama municipality, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Ahanta West and Effia-Kwesimintsim, are expected to be reached for the exercise.
These four are among the hard hit areas within the Western region.
The vaccination teams are expected to visit churches, mosques, markets, homes, schools and other earmarked areas of advantage for the exercise.
Ghana had its first sub-national vaccination campaign from November 30 to December 3, 2024, in three sub-districts of Awutu Senya East. An estimated 150,000 persons were targeted but the target was exceeded at the end of the exercise.
