Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western region woke up to shocking news on Monday, December 16, 2024, when they observed that the statue of President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had been vandalised.

The statue, which was unveiled by the President himself, has been a topic of controversy in the region. Many have questioned its necessity, citing the government’s unfulfilled promises and stalled projects in the area.

The statue’s location, near the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, has raised eyebrows, with some arguing that it’s an unnecessary expense.

Richard Kirk Mensah, the NDC Western Regional Communications Officer, has been vocal about his opposition to the statue, even suggesting that it be relocated to the President’s hometown of Kyebi in the Eastern region.

The vandalism of the statue has left many wondering what actually happened, as the area is relatively isolated with no nearby residential facilities.

Vendors in the area reported that the statue was untouched on Friday evening, but by Monday morning, it had been vandalized.

Locals around the Effia Nkwanta roundabout, including motorists and pedestrians, initially appeared pleased with the statue. However, when given the opportunity to share their thoughts on camera, their sentiments shifted.

Nana Adwoa Banko, a roasted plantain vendor near the roundabout, expressed her discontent. “Someone actually drew my attention to the statue’s vandalism,” she said. “I don’t think it’s right. They should have at least waited until after the handing over.”
