President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Angel Carbonu has called on President-elect, John Mahama, to immediately roll out policies to address the prevailing economic challenges.
According to him, the economic recovery policies should include addressing depreciation of cedi and cost of living of Ghanaians.
Mr Carbonu said this in an exclusive interview with 3news in Accra on January 2.
As of the end of 2024, the exchange rate was GHC16 to $1. The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted a depreciation of cedi by the first half of 2025.
Ahead of the swearing in of the President-elect, Mr Carbonu has charged Mr Mahama to expedite the recovery process.
“We are not competitive in relation to our neighbours in Togo and Cote d’Ivoire. Cote d’Ivoire is having a huge boom in their economy a lot of companies are gravitating towards Cote d’Ivoire, prices of goods and services change on daily basis, how can you run such economy.”
“I am not an economist, my problem is the end game where on daily basis we have our cedi dwindling regularly. It is not helping our economy,” Mr Carbonu noted.
He also appealed to former President John Mahama to dismiss ministers who fail to live up to expectation.
“Nana Addo was not able to crack the whip. How many times did Ghanaians not cry for a reshuffle. Common reshuffle the president said once you called for it, I am going to stick to it. I have not seen any government just carrying some shadow reshuffling activities,” he said.
Of a major concern to the President of NAGRAT is the need for Mr Mahama to begin process to allow elections of district chief executives.
“For me, let us maintain our district level assemblies as nonpartisan. Let the people go in as officially nonpartisan. By so doing when they even get the nod, they will owe no allegiance to any political structure.” he pointed out.
