Collection of road toll on Ghana’s Highways is going to be digitised after its reintroduction, the Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed.
He says the new technological form going to be introduced will eliminate the physical barriers on the roads. He said during his appearance before the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, 2025.
The manual payment and collection of toll which previously was the norm created obstructions on the road which the proposed method is a significant shift from.
In his statement, Agbodza expressed his concern over the government’s decision to cancel road toll previously, highlighting the potential loss of revenue and the negative impact on road infrastructure development.
“We decided to caution the government not to cancel road tolls but to find a way to improve the system,” he explained.
He noted that rather than cancelling the collection, the previous government should have improved the leakages to make it better rather than cancelling it.
He described the cancellation of the toll collection as an act of “illegality”, saying the then government failed to listen to the advice provided by the then Minority members on the Roads and Highways Committee.
He is confident the new system will improve efficiency and do away with the physical barriers to prevent the incessant traffic on the roads.
By using modern methods and technological solutions, road tolls will be easier to collect and will likely improve the overall road maintenance and development process.
Mr Agbodza assured that the new system would be fair and efficient, addressing the concerns of both road users and contractors while ensuring that road infrastructure projects receive the necessary funding.
